Silver River Stargazing

For most visitors the Silver River tour to book is the Alpine Stargazing experience: 75 minutes on a private high-country station, 14-inch telescopes, a group of no more than 10, a down jacket and a shuttle from the village, from $68 per person. The two-hour Ultimate tour, from $125 per person, adds a 16-inch telescope, a platter, hot drinks and accommodation pickup, and suits adults who want a slower, more personal night. It does not take anyone under 16 on GetYourGuide, so families should stick with Alpine.

Where Silver River takes you

Silver River Stargazing runs its Tekapo tours on a High Country Station, a 50,000-acre private property inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. The draw is distance from the village lights and a 360-degree horizon. You do not drive there yourself. Everyone checks in at 12 Rapuwai Lane, inside the Kiwi Treasure & Lake Tekapo Information Centre, and the included shuttle takes you out to the site.

Silver River states that it is “offsetting 120% of the carbon emissions from our tourism activities annually”.

The Alpine tour

The Silver River Alpine Stargazing tour lasts 75 minutes, with about an hour on site. It starts with an astro-laser tour of the stars and constellations, then moves to modern 14-inch telescopes aimed at deep-sky objects. The group is capped at 10, so there is little waiting at each eyepiece and plenty of time with the guide.

Warm down jackets are handed out for the whole session, in adult sizes only. The operator does not stock child-size jackets, so bring a proper warm coat for any children. At the end the guide takes a photo of your group under the stars, weather permitting, and the link arrives by email within about 48 hours.

Tours run in English and Japanese. The farm terrain is not suitable for wheelchair users. Only one infant is allowed per tour, and they must be booked onto the earliest departure of the night. Children from about 3 to 5 are accepted, so check the exact age at booking if you are bringing a toddler.

The Ultimate tour

The Silver River Ultimate Stargazing tour doubles the time to two hours and changes the pace. You are picked up from your accommodation in Lake Tekapo township and driven to a private, darker spot on the farm. You sit in a moon chair under a merino wool blanket (down jackets are provided too), with a platter of snacks and hot drinks, and use a modern 16-inch telescope, the largest Silver River uses. The guiding is more personal and includes photography instruction, and your photo is uploaded within about 24 hours.

Two details matter when booking. Platters need 48 hours’ notice, and can be made vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free or allergen-free if you say so early. Your card is charged in New Zealand dollars.

Which Silver River tour to book

Book Alpine if you are travelling with children, want the lowest price, or simply want a good first look through a big telescope. Choose Ultimate if you are adults only, want to be collected from your door, and would rather spend two unhurried hours with food and a larger telescope. Silver River vs Chameleon Stargazing

Chameleon Stargazing is from $74 per person for 90 minutes at a riverside site four minutes from the village. It has a 9.25-inch telescope and a smart telescope, groups of up to 14, seats and mattresses under blankets, hot chocolate, a fire bowl and edited photos. Transport is not included, and jackets are not provided.

Choose Silver River Alpine if you have no car, want bigger telescopes and a smaller group, and like the idea of a dark farm site. Silver River vs Dark Sky Project

Dark Sky Project’s Mount John Summit Experience is the choice if you want to stand on the 1,029 m summit beside the University of Canterbury’s working observatory. It takes 1 hour 45 minutes, starts from $125 per person and has a minimum age of 10. On a cloudy night

Silver River decides about an hour before check-in whether cloud will stop the tour, and emails guests if it does.
