Tekapo Springs Stargazing

Book Soak in the Stars if you want one evening that covers both of Tekapo’s night-time draws: a guided telescope session followed by a hot pool reserved for your group. It runs even when cloud rolls in, which makes it a safe booking if your dates in Tekapo are fixed. It costs more than the plain telescope tours, from $108 per person on GetYourGuide, and it does not take children under 10. If you want the darkest sky or the most time at the eyepiece, a dedicated stargazing tour is the better choice.

What happens on the night

The Soak in the Stars hot pools and stargazing experience takes place at Tekapo Springs on Lakeside Drive, the hot pools complex at the foot of Mount John. The stargazing is run on site by Tekapo Star Gazing.

The first part is roughly 50 minutes with high-powered telescopes. Guides show you planets, stars, galaxies and other deep-sky objects, and tell Māori star stories alongside the science. Then you move to a hot pool reserved for the group for about 35 minutes. The water sits between 37.5 and 38.5 °C, and floating hammocks let you lie back and keep watching the sky while gentle music plays. A guide stays poolside, answering questions and pointing out what is overhead.

Tekapo Springs lies within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, designated in June 2012 by the International Dark-Sky Association (now DarkSky International) and covering 4,367 km² of the Mackenzie Basin and Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. The Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds stay above the horizon on every clear night of the year, so there is always something to find from the pool.

Towels, robes, hot drinks and ponchos are included, and on GetYourGuide the hot drink is hot chocolate or green tea. Bring swimwear, warm clothes for the telescope part and for afterwards, and a hat for the pool on cold nights.

When it runs, and what happens if it is cloudy

The tour runs seven nights a week from October to April and five nights a week from May to September. Full darkness comes much later in summer: about 23:41 on 15 December, against about 18:50 on 15 June.

Cloud does not cancel this tour. Soak in the Stars vs Scope at the Stars

Tekapo Star Gazing sells two evening tours, and only one of them is on GetYourGuide.

The NZ dollar figures are the operator’s own adult rates at the time of writing. Scope at the Stars also includes hot drinks and ponchos. Choose it if you are travelling with children aged 6 to 9, or if you would rather use the pools in daylight. Choose Soak in the Stars for the night-time pool, the hammocks and the guide by the water.

How it compares with Chameleon and Mount John

Chameleon Stargazing costs less, from $74 per person, and gives you 90 minutes at a riverside site with a 9.25-inch telescope, blankets, hot chocolate, a fire bowl and edited photos. The Mount John Summit Experience from Dark Sky Project is from $125 per person for 1 hour 45 minutes. A bus takes you to the 1,029 m summit, above the lake and the village lights, where telescopes from 9¼ to 16 inches include one inside an observatory dome. Who should book something else

Families with children under 10 cannot join Soak in the Stars. Scope at the Stars takes children from 6, and Chameleon from 5; our stargazing with kids guide has the full list.

If a dark sky is the whole point, Tekapo Springs sits at the foot of Mount John beside the lake, while the Mount John summit and Silver River’s high-country station are further from the village lights. If you want the longest time at the telescope, around 50 minutes here is shorter than the full sessions on Mount John or Silver River’s two-hour Ultimate tour.

For couples and adult friends who want the telescopes and a warm soak in one booking, and anyone who cannot risk a cloud-out, Soak in the Stars is the one to pick. Check availability for your dates, and remember the swimwear.
