Scope at the Stars is not sold on GetYourGuide, so its figure is the operator’s own NZD adult rate at the time of writing. Silver River Alpine and Stargaze Mackenzie share the lowest price, but the Twizel tour means a drive of about 45 minutes each way from Tekapo.
What drives the price
Five things separate a $68 ticket from a $125 one.
- Summit access. Mount John’s public road is open only 9 am to 4 pm, so the Summit Experience is the only way to be on top after dark, beside a working university observatory at 1,029 m. That access, the bus and an extreme cold weather jacket are what the extra money buys.
- Duration. The cheapest tours run 75 minutes; the Ultimate runs two hours with a 16-inch telescope and personal guidance.
- Transport. Silver River’s shuttle, the Dark Sky Project bus and the Ultimate’s accommodation pickup are built into the price. Chameleon’s is not.
- Food and drink. Chameleon includes hot chocolate and marshmallows; the Ultimate adds a snack platter and hot drinks; the Dark Sky Project tours and Silver River Alpine exclude food and drink.
- Pools. Soak in the Stars pairs about 50 minutes of telescopes with around 35 minutes in a reserved hot pool, towels and robes included.
Best value at each budget
Book Chameleon if you want the most included for the least: 90 minutes, a photo, blankets, hot chocolate and a full refund if the operator cancels for weather. Choose Silver River Alpine if you want the lowest price with transport included and a 14-inch telescope, and don’t mind 75 minutes. What families pay
For families, the operators’ own NZD rates matter more than the GetYourGuide adult price, because child and family tickets vary a lot. These are operator rates at the time of writing, not GetYourGuide prices:

Minimum ages cap what a family can book as much as price does: Mount John and Soak in the Stars take children from 10, and Chameleon and the Crater Experience from five. Our stargazing with kids guide matches each tour to a child’s age.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Chameleon’s optional shuttle is NZ$20 per person from Simpson Lane in the village, paid to the operator. Driving yourself costs nothing extra.
- Driving up Mount John by day carries a NZ$14 toll for each car, and the road closes at 4 pm, so this is a daytime cost only.
- The Ultimate charges your card in New Zealand dollars, so check your card’s foreign-transaction fee.
- The 2-day tour from Christchurch does not include accommodation in Tekapo or meals; book your own room for the night.
- Warm clothing. Only Mount John and the Silver River tours lend jackets, and Silver River’s come in adult sizes only.
