Tekapo Stargazing with Kids

The best Tekapo stargazing tour for most families is Dark Sky Project’s Crater Experience at Cowan’s Observatory: 75 minutes, children from five, return transport from the lakefront and viewing craters that keep the wind off. Chameleon Stargazing is the other strong choice for the same ages, with blankets, hot chocolate and marshmallows. Wait until your children are 10 for the Mount John summit, and go in winter if you can, when dark falls around 7 pm.

Every tour for families, side by side

Minimum ages come from each operator or the GetYourGuide listing. Family prices are the operators’ own NZD rates at the time of writing, not GetYourGuide prices.

Start times follow the dark. On the 15th of the month, full dark comes at 6:50 pm in June and 7:02 pm in July, against 11:32 pm in January and 11:41 pm in December. Mount John also asks for one adult for every two children.

Why winter is the easier season with children

MackenzieNZ, the regional tourism body, puts it plainly: “There is no better time to stargaze than winter. Not only can you have the kids in bed at a reasonable hour, but the skies are at their clearest.” From May to August full dark comes between about 6:50 and 7:30 pm, so an early tour can have children home at a sensible hour. In December and January full dark does not arrive until after 11:30 pm, which is a late night for a five-year-old.

The price of winter is cold. Mean overnight lows at Tekapo are about −2 to −3 °C in June and July, so dress children for well below freezing. Our best time for stargazing guide has darkness times and temperatures for every month.

Under five: start indoors

Most night tours take children from five at the youngest, so for toddlers and preschoolers the practical option is Dark Sky Project’s indoor Dark Sky Experience at its lakefront base. It runs in the daytime for 45 to 60 minutes, covers Māori astronomy with storytelling and science across four zones, and is free for under-fives (NZ$59 adult, NZ$39 child and NZ$157 family at the time of writing). Of the night tours on this site, only Silver River Alpine mentions infants: it allows one per tour, on the earliest departure of the night. It has no child-size jackets, so bring your own.

Practical tips for the night

• Book the earliest departure of the night, especially in summer.
• Dress children in layers, with a warm hat, gloves and a proper jacket, even in summer. Only Mount John and the Silver River tours lend jackets, and Silver River’s are adult sizes.
• Bring a red-light torch. Chameleon asks for no white light at its site, and red light keeps everyone’s night vision.
• Pack snacks and a drink for the wait. The Dark Sky Project tours and Silver River Alpine exclude food and drink; Chameleon includes hot chocolate and marshmallows.
• Mount John involves about 100 m of gravel incline and a couple of steps in the dark, so make sure children have shoes with grip.

Under 5: the daytime Dark Sky Experience, or Silver River Alpine on its earliest departure if you want a night out with an infant.

Ages 5–9: the Crater Experience at Cowan’s if you want transport from the lakefront and shelter from the wind; Chameleon if you want to lie back under blankets with hot chocolate, and you have a car or book the shuttle.
