About This Experience

Silver River Stargazing takes its guests away from the village altogether, to a private high-country station of around 50,000 acres inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Out there the only lights are the stars, and the horizon runs a full 360 degrees.

You check in on Rapuwai Lane in the village, get a short safety briefing and ride the shuttle out — about five minutes each way. The guided session itself runs about an hour: a naked-eye tour with astro-lasers, then time at modern 14-inch telescopes aimed at star clusters, nebulae and planets when they are up.

Groups are capped at 10 people, so the telescope-to-guest ratio is small and you are not queueing for the eyepiece. Warm down jackets are provided in adult sizes, and you receive a photo of yourself under the stars, shared by digital link after the tour.

Commentary is in English and Japanese. The operator says it offsets 120% of the carbon from its tourism activities each year.

Good to Know & Caveats

Only one infant is allowed per tour, and they must be booked onto the earliest departure of the night.
The operator decides about an hour before check-in whether cloud will stop the tour, and emails guests if it does.
Tours cancelled for weather are rescheduled or refunded.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time.

Ren was a fantastic guide!! Even though there were clouds covering the sky, Ren would still point out some of the stars we could see popping in between the clouds. He took the time to show us photos he’s taken of a clear dark sky and what we would see if the clouds weren’t there. We were still able to use the large telescope and look at one of the stars close up. Overall, and despite the cloud cover, Ren did a fantastic job talking about the night sky. Don’t be too discouraged if the weather forecast doesn’t look great because they still put on a great event.
