About This Experience

Chameleon Stargazing runs its tours from a dark site on Andrew Don Drive, four minutes by car from the Lake Tekapo village centre and right beside the Tekapo River. It is close enough to reach without a shuttle and far enough from the township lights to sit comfortably inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

The 90 minutes split into two parts. First comes a naked-eye tour of the sky, with your astronomy guide pointing out constellations and telling their stories — science, Greek myth and Māori star lore side by side. Then you move to the telescopes: a 9.25-inch instrument and a smart telescope that finds its own targets, used to show star clusters, nebulae, planets when they are up, and galaxies beyond our own.

The comfort is the thing guests mention most. You settle into outdoor seats, pillows and mattresses under blankets, with hot chocolate in hand (lactose-free and gluten-free on request) and marshmallows toasting over a fire bowl. At the end you receive edited photos of your group under the night sky, so nobody has to fight a phone camera in the dark.

Groups are capped at 14 guests, children from five years old are welcome, and tours are offered in English and Chinese. In summer the last departures run late — a midnight tour on 31 December falls on 1 January, which is why the listing asks you to book the next calendar day for anything after midnight.

Good to Know & Caveats

• Tours after midnight belong to the next calendar date — a midnight tour on 31 December is booked as 1 January.
• It gets very cold at night in Tekapo in every season; blankets are provided but jackets are not.
• The site is a four-minute drive from the village centre, next to the Tekapo River.
• Groups are limited to 14 guests.
• If the operator cancels for cloud, rain, snow or fog, you are offered a full refund.
• Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time.
